With her reign with Philip II of Spain. Though originally the base penny was created under her brother Edward VI. These bear Mary and Philip’s Half Tower-Half Rose Privy Mark. Most were struck in London and shipped off to Ireland. The initial batch was some 3.2 million pieces. But many returned to England and because they were of debased silver, used as half-pence. Later declared unlawful money, and in time discarded much like Philip.
